What You Need To Do - 
Tournament Prep

• We have decided to move forward with sending interp students to Roosevelt.  This tournament is October 16th/17th.  This is a Friday-Saturday tournament over MEA.  You will NOT miss any school.  
• This tournament is still three weeks away.  We will be able to get a piece, cut it and practice it well to be ready for the tournament.  
• We will be able to make modifications to the debate practice schedule so that we can get you ready in time.

Practice Expectations

• When you arrive at your scheduled practice you need to have an original source.
• You need to have read through the source and chosen the climax and some supporting material.  
• You will need a laptop or something to take notes on and modifications.

• Roosevelt Commitment Forms are due October 1.  Please email the speech account if there are questions. 
• We will begin two day/week practices after MEA.

The traveling season is about to begin.  Thank you to those that came to the meeting on Wednesday the 9th.  There was an explanation of expectations, parent support and team commitment forms presented at the meeting.  The presentation and commitment forms are here.

The Speech form must be returned before you may begin practice.   This is a complete list of tournaments.  For the traveling portion we need the FALL SEASON completed.  You will have the opportunity to fill out an additional form for the WINTER/SPRING SEASON.

Practice begins for Oratory Thursday, September 10th at 6PM.

Practice begins for Extemp Wednesday, September 16th

Practice begins for HI, DI, DUO, POI Thursday, September 17th at 6:00 in ROOM 325.  This will be a check in meeting and will last no more than an hour.  If you are a debater you will attend the speech meeting for the first few minutes and then head to practice.

We will be going over expectations, coach introductions, schedule, and practices.

Glenbrooks November 20th - 22nd

It's time!

Glenbrooks is so tricky because we have to be willing to commit VERY EARLY.  If you would like to attend this tournament I need to know by Saturday.  I realize this is in two days, but I just found out yesterday and spots will fill quickly.  Another reason for making a quick decision is that we are going to fly this year and flights are cheap now. 

So if you are intending on attending this tournament we need a commitment by Saturday.  Please print the form and email it to me by the date.

The price should be relatively comparable to last year.  We will not miss school, because we plan to fly Friday evening and return Sunday night.  With flying you will need you to commit. 

The other tournaments will be less frantic and we will hand the commitment forms out on our first practice. 

PRACTICE BEGINS FOR DI, HI, and OO on SEPT 17th at 6:00.  There will be a an all travel team meeting that day to get forms and discuss expectations. 

Don't forget the annual meeting on September 9th at 6:30 with EFOF social at 6:00 in the Fick Auditorium.

We are going to make this year the best yet! 

Edina Speech Traveling Team

The traveling team is getting started and we want to make sure that you have all of the information. 

We will hold a PARENT and STUDENT meeting on  Wednesday, September 9th 6:30 PM at EHS Fick Auditorium.  There will be a cookie and coffee social by EFOF at 6:00PM.

It's important to have a parent and debater attend so that we can start the season on common understanding of expectations and the nuts-and-bolts of how you can help your student.

Donations for Edina Forensics

We have been given an amazing opportunity for Edina Forensics these past few years.  It began when debate made significant changes to move them forward competitively.  Now it is speech's turn! We have added six new coaches and workshops that will impact the entire team.  We now need to show our support.  The talk-a-thon is August 22nd, from 10AM - 9PM.  We are working to make our goal of 1/4 of a million words during the talk-a-thon.  We need people to speak during the event and volunteer during the day.  We also need everyone to promote the teams and collect donations to support the positive changes to the team. 


This is the link for online donations to Edina Forensics.  It may say Edina Debate, but we are working as one team and money will be shared amongst all participants.

You are the team's best advocates.  You know why speech and debate are important.  The talk-a-thon is a great way to allow others in the community see what we are about!

Edina Talkathon at the Galleria

The Edina debate and speech teams are jointly hosting an 11-hour talk-a-thon.  By the end of the day our team members will have spoken a quarter million words.  The Galleria is providing a fabulous location and all of the facilities needed to make this event special.  The event begins at 10AM on Saturday, August 22nd and ends at 9PM.  All through the day mall visitors will be treated to speeches and debates put on by the Edina debate and speech teams.  

This is a fundraiser for the Edina Friends of Forensics as well.  You will be sent more information on how this works. 


What you need to do is participate! We need debaters and parents both to volunteer to make this event run properly.
