Holiday Homework

I hope that you have had a relaxing break thus far.  Here are things that you need to be doing to keep us moving forward in the speech season.  ***REMEMBER our first tournament is Saturday, January 24th @ Chanhassen.  Please check at home to ensure your attendance.  We will start taking count on the Thursday, January 8th practice.

Our first practice back WILL BE January 5th.  We will be at the EHS.  Here are the things that need to be done for our practice.

Varsity:  If you hope to be ready with a doubled event please be in contact with us via email so that we can move forward in hopes that you will be ready by that January 24th tournament.  Your first event must be memorized and have the most recent draft sent to the speech account.

Novice OR others participating in the following events:

Great Speeches:  Email or share most recent drafts to the speech account and be memorized by January 5th.

Info:  Email or share most recent drafts to the speech account and be memorized by January 5th.  We will have tripods or stands for you to check out during the season.  You will need to get 5-8 pieces of black foam board or tag board.  (I suggest the dollar store cheaper)  Then you will need to be finding images that would enhance your speech.  We understand that this is new to you so if you had the boards and several images saved we will have a meeting to talk about additional things needed and a day where we make boards together.

Storytelling and Extemp Reading:   All stories need to be printed out! Storytelling may have them in a binder or folder.   Extemp reading MUST HAVE  a small black binder (smaller then 8 x 11 sheet of paper) and put all prose selections in them.   BOTH EVENTS MUST HSVE ALL INTROS WRITTEN.  Finally we need dramatic structure for three of the selections.  Dramatic structure includes:  Exposition, rising action, climax, and falling action.

Prose: Needs to have most recent cutting sent to the speech account.  You also must turn in a dramatic structure.  MEMORIZE!

Please email with questions.  It is not to your benefit to wait until Monday and try to catch up.  These are all things that you can do at home and if you have questions we will answer in a timely manner!

Things to have:
  • Laptop or internet device for cutting and revising.
  • tape, scissors, paper for actual cutting of the piece.
  • Original source
  • Work ethic.
Our first meet is ONE WEEK away and we want to be ready to go.  We need to use our time wisely and efficiently.

Park Hill Registration and Thursday Practice

Practice is from 7:45  - 8:45.  We had several students missing on Monday due to other conflicts so to make the most of our time together you will need to be prepared.
  •  Elizabeth will be there around 7:30 to start working with kids in the commons.
  • Have your materials ready and available so when it is your turn you can jump right in.
  • When you aren't working with a coach use your time wisely, time your piece finish cutting, work with captains.
Turn in forms for Park Hill.  They are due on Friday, but to have them Thursday would be the easiest as we will all be together.  We would really like a good turn out for these traveling tournaments so please do your part to work on your pieces and come prepared and ready to compete! :)

Glenbrooks

The Glenbrooks tournament in the suburbs of Chicago is a large, nationally-acclaimed tournament that draws competition from all over the country. We are happy to announce that our speech team will be attending this year! Students wishing to attend should note the following information:

  • The tournament is held the weekend before Thanksgiving, and, with travel, students would be missing both the Friday (November 21st) and Monday (November 24th) of school. With this much advanced notice, students should be able to easily coordinate with their teachers to get their work done in advance, or plan an alternate schedule for completion. It is the student's responsibility to coordinate with his/her teachers and ensure that all work is accounted for.
  • Students wishing to attend the tournament must get their parents' permission before signing up on the attached general form. They must then have their parents complete the attached parental permission form.
  • Link to Sign-up Form (This is an editable form. Please only add your own name, and make no changes otherwise)
  • Link to Parent Permission form (This is NOT an editable form. Please print and return to secretary with parent signature)
  • THESE FORMS ARE DUE ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH

First Official Team Practice!

Remember that the first official team practice will be this Monday, September 15th, from 7:45-8:45 PM in EHS 320.

Please come prepared with:

  • Your original source material (i.e. the original script)
  • Something to take notes with/on (if you are going to take notes on a laptop/tablet, make sure you have an organized system of saving notes set up ahead of time!)
  • Your cutting or the most recent draft of your speech in HARD COPY. As in PRINTED.
  • If you have a laptop with which to make immediate changes to your speech, that would be great, but not necessary

We look forward to seeing you all again!
